When “Make It 3D” Is Not Yet a Brief
A launch is approaching, a sales team needs a stronger product film, or a campaign needs a centrepiece. Someone says: “Make it 3D.” What they often mean is: make it feel premium, modern, technical or credible.
That is a reasonable ambition, but it is not yet a production brief.
Start with a more useful question: what must the audience understand, believe or remember after watching?
If they need to see how fluid moves through a sealed industrial pump, 3D may be central to the evidence. If they need to understand a new service model, policy change or sequence of decisions, a clear 2D motion system may explain it faster. If both are true, a hybrid approach may be the better buy.
Format is a communication and evidence decision before it is an aesthetic preference. Quality is not synonymous with photorealism. It is the fit between the audience, product truth, story, design direction, approval process, delivery needs and production method.
What does the audience need to see?

A useful test is to complete this sentence: “The audience will only believe this if they can see ____.”
The answer should shape the format recommendation. “3D can show anything” may be true, but it does not establish that 3D will improve comprehension, credibility or the action the film is intended to support.
When 3D earns its place
3D is most valuable when spatial truth is part of the proof. This includes machinery, architectural spaces, medical devices, manufacturing systems, internal components, assembly sequences and physical interactions.
It can also make inaccessible, sealed, remote, dangerous, non-portable or not-yet-built products demonstrable without a prototype, location shoot or disruptive filming process.
For example:
- An industrial pump may need a cross-section showing flow paths and component relationships. - A medical device may need to show how a mechanism operates in use, subject to appropriate technical and legal review. - A building-system film may need to travel through spaces or infrastructure that cannot be filmed in their finished state. - A premium consumer device may benefit from selected macro shots that establish material, construction and craft.
However, 3D does not automatically provide engineering accuracy. Product truth depends on the source material, visual interpretation and technical review.
Engineering CAD is not necessarily animation-ready. Files may need cleaning, optimisation, conversion, rebuilding or visual reinterpretation before they can be lit, animated and rendered reliably. A technically correct model may also contain more detail than the story needs, reveal unresolved product decisions or make key information harder to follow.
Nor is realism always the right direction. When a product is still evolving, a controlled, stylised visualisation may be safer than highly literal renders that imply final details have been locked.
The term 3D tuning is sometimes used to describe refining a model, material, lighting or camera treatment for a particular visual result. For a buyer, the important question is not whether that work is named in a proposal, but what it achieves: an accurate, approvable and brand-appropriate representation of the product.
When 2D is the more intelligent choice
2D is not a lesser substitute for 3D. It is often the better communication method when the challenge is abstraction, sequence, hierarchy or message clarity.
A service proposition, policy change, internal workflow, data relationship or software-adjacent value proposition rarely becomes clearer because every idea has depth and simulated lighting. It may become clearer because the film decides what matters first, what can be grouped and what the audience can safely ignore.
2D can be especially effective for:
- processes and decision paths; - data relationships and comparisons; - service models and operational change; - training and internal communications; - category shifts and strategic narratives; - global campaigns requiring translation, regional versions or aspect-ratio adaptations.
A strong graphic system can become a long-term production asset. It can support shorter edits, presentations, social cutdowns, localisation and future releases without rebuilding a complex CG sequence for every change.
That does not mean 2D is automatically inexpensive. Bespoke illustration, sophisticated character work, detailed motion systems and frame-by-frame animation can all be substantial productions. Compare scope, complexity, finish level and revision requirements—not the labels “2D” and “3D.”
Hybrid is often the least wasteful answer
The boundary between formats should be useful, not ideological. A hybrid approach often protects both clarity and budget:

- use 3D for the product reveal, cross-section, assembly, material detail or physical interaction; - use 2D for feature hierarchy, labels, diagrams, typography, UI representations, data and calls to action; - use a shared design system so transitions feel intentional rather than like separate films joined together.
Consider a consumer-device launch. A small number of 3D macro sequences may establish material quality and physical design; 2D can then organise benefits in an order the audience can retain.
Or consider a product that is still changing. Limited 3D may prove a key mechanism, while graphic explanation avoids repeatedly reworking surface details as specifications develop.
The same logic applies to localisation. A 2D-led messaging layer is often more practical to translate, resize and update, while the 3D component can remain focused on physical proof that is consistent across markets.
Why a “60-second 3D animation” is not enough to compare quotes
Runtime alone does not make proposals comparable. Technical 3D commonly introduces work that may not exist in a simple 2D explanation: modelling, CAD preparation, materials, lighting, rendering, compositing, look development, effects and technical validation.
But the true cost driver is the required scope and finish, not the format label alone.
Before requesting quotes, ask suppliers to state what is included in each of these areas:
- Asset creation: Is the product model supplied, reused, cleaned from CAD, rebuilt or created from references? - Technical interpretation: Who verifies claims, dimensions, component relationships and permissible simplification?

- Shot scope: How many distinct scenes, camera moves, environments, product states and cutaways are assumed? - Finish level: Is the intended result graphic, stylised, product-realistic or photorealistic? - Sound: Are script development, voiceover, music licensing, sound design and mix included? - Reviews and revisions: How many rounds occur at treatment, board, style, animation and final stages? Who consolidates feedback? - Versions: Are language versions, regional adaptations, channel cutdowns and alternate aspect ratios included or priced separately? - Delivery: Which masters, codecs, captions, stills, clean versions and platform formats will be supplied? - Rights and ownership: What usage rights apply to music, stock, talent, source files, product models and project assets? - Future change: What will updates cost if product specifications, copy, packaging, claims or regional requirements change?
This detail matters because late changes have different consequences in different formats. A changed line of copy may be straightforward in a typographic scene, but it can affect timing, labels, camera framing, renders, translations and approvals in a detailed product sequence.
Make approval a production stage, not a rescue operation
The hidden burden in format choice is often approval, not animation alone. Product, engineering, legal, brand, marketing, procurement and agency stakeholders may each have a different view of what must be literal, what may be simplified and what is merely illustrative.
A defensible process establishes those choices before high-finish work begins:
1. Treatment: Define the communication approach, audience, evidence, format recommendation and visual territory. 2. Storyboards or animatic: Agree the story, hierarchy, pacing and shot logic before detailed production. 3. Styleframes: Approve the design direction, degree of realism, materials, typography, illustration and brand fit. 4. Technical review: Validate product claims, spatial logic, terminology and agreed simplifications. 5. Final production: Move into high-finish animation and rendering only after consequential decisions are approved.
Delayed CAD, incomplete product references, changing specifications or a subject-matter expert appearing only at final review can create schedule and cost risk. These are briefing and governance issues, not simply vendor-performance issues.

AI-assisted production does not remove the selection problem
AI-assisted methods can accelerate selected parts of a commissioned pipeline, such as early visual exploration, certain backgrounds, textures or controlled versioning. That may be useful where the work is non-critical and consistency, rights and review are properly managed.

It does not guarantee product fidelity, visual continuity, brand safety, rights clarity or an easier approval process. Render-like imagery can create a false sense that a product sequence is technically solved when its geometry, labels, behaviour or claims have not been validated.
Judge AI-assisted work against the same criteria as conventional production:
- Does it meet the communication objective? - Does it accurately represent the product or service? - Does it match the brand and remain consistent from shot to shot? - Is there an approvable process for reviewing and correcting the work? - Are rights, usage terms and delivery masters clear? - Can the material be updated or localised without introducing new inconsistency?
AI is a production method, not a substitute for story, design, technical interpretation, review management or a delivery-ready master.
A practical scorecard for choosing 2D, 3D or hybrid
Before requesting proposals, assess each option against these questions. The strongest choice is not necessarily the most visually elaborate one; it is the one that best supports the evidence the audience needs.
- Does the audience need physical proof, or an explanation of meaning and sequence? - Would spatial detail clarify the message or distract from it? - Which product details must be factually exact, and which can be simplified? - Is a usable CAD model available, and has anyone confirmed it is suitable for visual production? - How likely are the product, claim, packaging or interface to change before launch? - Which stakeholders must approve factual accuracy, design, legal claims and final delivery? - How many markets, languages, formats and future versions are likely? - What rights, source materials and delivery masters must the organisation retain? - Is the intended quality level appropriate for the audience, channel and viewing context? - Can the supplier explain why its recommended format solves the communication problem, rather than simply show its preferred reel?
Ask shortlisted suppliers to recommend 2D, 3D or hybrid; state the assumptions behind that recommendation; identify the principal approval risks; and separate essential production work from optional finish or versioning.
Return to the original test: “The audience will only believe this if they can see ____.” If the blank is a physical mechanism, material truth or spatial relationship, test 3D. If it is a process, proposition, decision or relationship, test 2D. If it is both, design the hybrid deliberately.
