Graphic identity
Illustration can match a brand system more tightly than default CGI materials.
2D animation
2D animation is motion designed on a flat picture plane: drawings, vector art, painted frames, or graphic characters that move without a true digital volume. Depth is suggested with scale, overlap, and camera tricks—not a 3D model you can orbit. 2D is the language of classic character cartoons, many explainers, editorial films, and stylized brand stories. It is often faster to art-direct and cheaper than cinematic 3D at the same runtime—if the brief wants illustration, not photoreal space.
Definition
Traditional 2D was frame-by-frame drawing. Today it also includes rigged 2D puppets, paperless digital ink, and AI-assisted generation that still reads as illustration. The test is visual: if the camera cannot freely walk around a solid object, you are in 2D territory.
Motion graphics often uses 2D techniques (type, icons, infographics) but is usually about information and brand systems, not character performance. Both can live in one film; they are not the same craft.
If the brief is type, UI, and diagrams more than acting, read motion graphics first.
Definition
2D animation is sequential motion composed on a two-dimensional image—characters and worlds that live as drawings, not as sculpted 3D assets.
How it works
Approve line, color, and character turnaround so every later shot matches the same drawing rules.
Plan acting and cuts on a timeline. 2D hides mistakes less than 3D once a scene is fully drawn.
Performance is posed, then in-betweened by artists, rigs, or directed AI passes under the same design bible.
Effects, type, VO, and grade sit on top of the picture. Delivery includes masters and cutdowns.

Why 2D
Illustration can match a brand system more tightly than default CGI materials.
Metaphors, maps, and abstract processes stay clear without building a full 3D set.
Stylized acting and line work often feel warmer for stories that should not look like a video game cinematic.
Use cases
Brand
When the brand already lives in drawing, 2D keeps the film inside that world.
Product
Processes and policies read faster as designed 2D than as heavy CGI.
Entertainment
Some IPs should never look photoreal. 2D is a creative choice, not a budget compromise.
