Time on screen
People give minutes to a story they will not give to a pre-roll they can skip.
Branded entertainment
Branded entertainment is narrative a brand pays for that people will sit with as entertainment—an episode, a short, a limited series—not a thirty-second interruption they skip. The brand is in the DNA: product, world, or values. The contract with the viewer is still a story. That is why it is produced like a film or a series: bible, boards, performance, sound—not like a banner with a plot. Buyers commission it when they want memory and IP, not only a media flight. If the brief is really a product demo, say so. Do not spend series money on a commercial that is afraid to be a commercial.
Definition
Branded content is the wider bucket: anything a brand publishes. Branded entertainment is the subset that has to work as a show or a film. If nobody would watch it without the media buy, it is still an ad.
Animation is a frequent choice because the brand can own characters and worlds without casting talent for every season. Ownership only helps if the bible is real.
When the entertainment is episodic, you are commissioning an animated series with a brand in the room.
Definition
Branded entertainment is story-led film or series funded by a brand, made to be watched as entertainment rather than skipped as advertising.
How it works
Write both down. If the brand job is “show the SKU for twelve seconds,” you do not have entertainment yet.
Where it plays, for how long, and who owns the characters after the campaign.
A brand film can be a single statement. A branded series needs a bible and a showrunner, even if marketing owns the PO.
Legal and brand gates on a calendar. Endless parallel notes will make it an ad again.
Why it works
People give minutes to a story they will not give to a pre-roll they can skip.
Characters and places can return next year. A product shot usually cannot.
A film can travel to culture. A spec sheet cannot.
